The Ozarks are great in the fall with mid October being one of the best times to visit. Many of the rivers are spring fed insuring a good flow of water. It also means that the water is cold. The weather in October varies from warm sunny days to frosty nights. Be prepared for cool weather with proper clothing and camping gear.

Hi James,

The picture seems impressive and portrays leisure filled vacations around the corner. I have some questions regarding this place:

- Is October-November time good for visiting Ozark?
- I’m interested in fishing therefore please share any fishing related information
- What’s your opinion about the camping activities in this spot?

I’m sure you will provide me quick response, which would be better for my trip. Moreover according to my schedule, if you have idea of other places then share with us.

Yesterday, I had the opportunity to go paddling with Bear Bass, the owner of Ozark Outdoors canoe rental.

We had a long conversation about drinking on the Courtois and Huzzah Creeks and talked about getting together some interpretive family trips to teach people about the wildlife and geology of the Meramec and its watershed. I was impressed with his knowledge of the rivers and streams he paddles.

Along the way we found a huge eddy full of beer cans and without hesitation Bear beached his canoe and began throwing cans in it. We filled the area between the thwarts all the way to the gunwales with discarded cans, shoes, plastic containers and a relatively nice pair of sunglasses.

Bear has a unique knowledge and love of the streams he operates on.

I normally try not to show favoritism on this site but if you’re going to paddle the Huzzah Creek, Courtois Creek or the Meramec River then get your boat or shuttle from the people at Ozark Outdoors and tell them James sent you.

Bear pointing out one of the many geological features of the river bluffs as Tilley sits quietly and a bit confused.

The Campbell Bridge and our brief paddle was over much to soon.

Thanks Bear, I had a great trip.

Huzzah Creek, Missouri

Yes, the Huzzah is a wonderful creek to enjoy the day on. Some of the upper parts near Berryman slab and the Hwy 8 bridge are getting a little on the shallow side, but is still floatable in canoes and kayaks.

The story about the young man is very unfortunate, and all of our sympathies go out to Holmquest's friends and family. Let this event be a reminder to us all that Mother Nature changes our suroundings from day to day. Please remember to respect the rivers in Missouri and do not jump from any bluffs. The rocks and trees move on the river floor each and every time if floods during the spring. The bluff you jumped off of last year is not the same one this year.

Please be careful while on the river this summer!

STEELVILLE, Mo. -- A Columbia man has died after jumping off a cliff in eastern Missouri's Crawford County and striking his head.

The Missouri State Water Patrol said in a news release that 25-year-old Garrick Holmquest landed Saturday afternoon in about 6 feet of water in Huzzah (HOO'-zah) Creek. Bystanders pulled him from the water.

He was taken to St. John's Mercy Medical Center in Creve Coeur, but did not survive.

An autopsy will be performed to determine a cause of death.

Jumping off cliffs into a river is a dangerous activity. It seems fun and harmless but there are always rocks, logs and shallow water. Be careful out there. The river is trying to kill you, try and outsmart it.

Cate and I went last weekend and the water was a little high and sort of murky from all the rain. Still the Huzzah is a great river to paddle. We rented our boat from Ozark Outdoors. They have some great new We-No-Nah boats that are fast and stable.

These two clearwater gems, which join their waters to the Meramec River in Crawford County, are only about 100 miles from St. Louis. Although they are too small to provide adequate floating water at all seasons, the angler will find them pleasant and profitable floating-wading streams. In seasons of good water, the canoeist will find them quite sporty. Their valleys are relatively unspoiled and have real Ozarks atmosphere. It would be wise to check water levels of these creeks at Hwy. 8 bridges before attempting floats upstream from the highway. The names of the creeks are pronounced locally as Coort-a-way and Hoo-za.
