I thought I would start a discussion about some of my favorite brewed beverages to take along on paddling trips. In Missouri, USA, we are required to leave the bottled beer on shore, so the challenge becomes finding quality beer in cans. For those of us in short distance to larger stores in metro-area locals, that may not be too difficult. Out of the city, though, it is tough, so planning ahead to purchase “pre-trip” becomes a necessity. I like well-crafted, well-balanced darker beers (typically British style ales or German dark lagers). Brown ales, bitters, old ales, wee heavy…dunkles, bocks, double bocks, and even the odd pale ale or alt. That being said, there are just a few locally available in cans in my areas, so I’ve tried them all one time or another. I like Newcastle, Bass, Baltika (6 & 9), Smithwick’s, Murphy’s red (and stout, but I like Guinness better), Young’s double chocolate stout, Fat Tire, Dales Pale Ale and Old Chub (Scottish ale), and an assortment of lighter fare for hot summer days. I’m looking forward to hearing what other enjoy… |

I like Boddingtons in cans. It’s kind of a malty and not so hoppy drink of reddish brown colour with a thick head like whipped cream. I even drink it at home. I like the Guinness too, but it bothers my stomach. I suspect it may be due to the lactose used to sweeten stouts and porters. I love a good beer, and brew my own too, but for the most part my thirst is quenched with the common but effective Bud or Bud Lite. Or water, God forbid if it should come to that. |

I’ll mention a few Scottish brews if I may. Belhaven 80 shilling is nice, as is the darker 60 shilling. And Deuchars too. Also Brugge Zot from Belgium. And a pint of Cobra if I’m having a curry…

I was just thinking that the title of this discussion should have been “Best Brews For Boarding Parties.” |

How long does it take to make a homebrew? I never got to take the brewery tour here is St. Louis. |

I used to, but the results were dubious to say the least. I’m not giving up the day job,

When I stopped in a local store in Grand Maris, MN at the start of vaction I decided I wanted to try a local beer. I noticed there was a Kayak beer by Lake Superior Brewing company. That was a must try. It was great expecially after a long day a paddling. http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4048/4693553377_fc72cb0515_b.jpg http://www.flickr.com/photos/hueyav8r/4693580631/ http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4048/4693553377_fc72cb0515_b.jpg |

In parts of or all of Canad it’s illegal to take alcohol into any vessel not having a head .. that’s why I take brandy, strong stuff in small bottles easy to hide in stainless steel drink bottles .. Maciera Portugese brandy is excellent and only a tad more costly. But of course, with alcohol being involved in up to 40% of canoeing fatalities in Canada it’s not a good idea to drink and paddle at the same time. |
