Also known as, "Classic Canadian Solo", a name attributed to Beckey Mason and her father Bill Mason. Known as "Omering" in the US, based on the technique adopted by Omer Stringer.
There is a pretty informative article over at - http://www.wildsurvive.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=149&Itemid=84
After I saw this in the Bill Mason videos, I was anxious to try it for myself. In the past I always trimmed the canoe the best I could by shifting around the gear and kneeling in the middle of the canoe. Like everything else I can see that learning to use this technique will take some practice. I have actually seen whitewater kayakers do somthing similar, heeling the boat over on it's side in order to use the narrow part of the kayak as a sort of keel to move forward in a straight line. Or maybe it was just clever showmanship. I've only been in one of those type of kayaks very briefly if you know what I mean.
I guess the downside of this technique is that you run the risk of people around you and on shore constantly yelling, "Hey OMER!"

I wrote something about this years ago on Nessmuking.com. How to Solo a Tandem Canoe. Here's a picture of me looking very young. In the U.S. it's also known as freestyle.

I'm glad somebody likes the photo FP. ;-)
I really dig that wooden canoe Bryan. It makes me want to move to the country and build boats in an old red barn. Maybe raise some chickens...
