I recently bought a 1985 CJ solo that has been converted to a tandem. I bought it for paddling flat water and mild rivers with my 8-year-old son because I can carry it without any help. However, the person who converted it seems to have placed the cane seats without much thought as to balance. Can anyone give me insight or direct me to a book or an article for determining the best placement of the seats, thwart, and yoke, as in the number of inches from the bow or stern for each? The canoe has been brought in to 30″ wide and it is 15 1/2 feet long. Thanks for any insights. |

Article: How to Determine the Best Placement of Canoe Seats. Yoke: Find the balance point of the canoe with the seats and thwart installed. Put the yoke just enough behind the balance point so that the bow rises slightly when on your shoulders. Thwart: Far enough forward the rear seat to comfortably sit and far enough behind the yoke to get a canoe pack between the two. Hope that helps. |
