I’ve been drinking Laphroaig lately. It’s hard to order because I’m not sure how to pronounce it but it sure tastes good with two cubes in it. Now to find my flask…they don’t allow glass bottles on the river. |

Laphroaig is a nice single malt. You have good taste! It’s pronounced La Froig. Don’t allow glass bottles? We have no such restrictions over here. Besides, who would police it? And glass bottles are useful for sending messages in. |

This looks like a serious list of canoeing items. The first page covers the essentials but I like where it ends up. Don’t forget to bring some cheese and crackers.

I was thinking they were some kind of savoury snack. Maybe if you run out of food on a long trip… |

I’d rather eat the paddle than a pair of Chacos |

Anyone say a nice tobacco pipe??? Nothing better than sitting back smoking a pipe and floating across a lake. |

A pipe sounds like a nice addition to the kit. |

It’s the time of year to start bringing jackets, something to make fire with and extra clothing in a dry bag. I think we’re pretty much done with those Indian Summer days where we get to paddle in swimsuits. |

I did my first trip (of six weeks) using a Tupperware tote box for a wannigan but I’ve come to regard my homebuilt, airtight, latchable-lockable, backpackable 3/16″ plywood wannigan and also my similar cook box as essential items for many reasons including animal deterrence, safety on the water and rugged durability. My wannigan lid sits upright when the wind is behind me and serves as a great sail but can be shut and latched in about five seconds. My cookbox has the stove set up when I lift the lid. Beneath the sliding, easily removed stove tray are three compartments for food, pots and pans, water filtration unit etc. My cook box also serves as a canoe cart by the simple addition of an axle and two wheels which I take with me (I don’t own an automobile and a cart is a necessity.) This year I also bought a large pickel barrel backpack which will be interesting experimenting with. Oh yes, and my bear spear which also serves to discourage domestic dogs with bad tempers and suspicious natures. |
