Hello all and welcome to the Adventure Canoe Forum. My name is James Dixson and I am an avid canoer. I began canoeing at a very young age with my father. When I was about 12 he bought us a Folbot and we took it on several trips on lakes and rivers near our home in St. Louis.
One of my first merit badged on my way to becoming an Eagle Scout was the canoeing merit badge. I learned a lot paddling around in those huge aluminum boats. As I got older I would take our Aquaterra Chinook on two and three day trips down river. I also began to join in on trips that we refer to as ‘float trips’ on the Huzzah and Courtios. These are usually drunken affairs where we’d camp in a group site near our cars and then load into a bus, drunk and hung over, the next morning to drink more beer on the river. It has its place but it’s not really all that fun. I spent three years working at a local outdoor retailer called the Alpine Shop. There, I gained a lot of knowledge of boats and gear so ask me any questions you have. Later in life I actually designed and programmed their website at my current job as a partner at Atomicdust, a online advertising agency. I’d gone on a few solo trips and then started riding my motorcycle to the woods. I’ve always loved being outside. After I got married my wife didn’t like the idea of me leaving every weekend to go ride so we got back into canoeing as a way to explore the outdoors together. We’ve been on several trips together and ‘tricked’ familiy and friends into going with us. We’ve mostly rented boats from several good outfitters in southern Missouri or borrowed a canoe from friends. We are planning on buying a Nova Craft Prospector for the fall paddling season. I’ve paddled one before and so far it’s my favorite boat.
