It would wrong I think to really call the backwaters where I paddle the most, lake or river, but they are attached to the Mississippi and some are called lakes. I like it because there is so much area to paddle and that much of it is shallow enough that the bass boats don’t get in there, or when they do, they are on the troller. the following is a collection of photos from my area that were collected at different outings over the last two years. The area is around Savanna Illinois and Sabula Iowa. The following shots are all on the Illinois side.
Bluffs Illinois side from Savanna Bay about 2 miles north of Savanna.
looking south accross Savanna Bay towards Savanna. The Savanna Sabula bridge is in the distance connecting Illinois and Iowa.
Middle of Savanna Bay looking north
heading north into the area known as Buffalo
Buffalo lake
Just a few shots to give you the flavor of my paddling area. Thanks for looking Mike |

Mike, I’m interested in kayaking this area in mid December, any suggestions? Are there any restrictions / concerns (hunters?) I should be aware of? Any advice would be appreciated.. or suggested resources. Just read about this location, so I’m just beginning to research the area. Thanks, Chad |

Chad If you get in the area let me know and I’ll show you around if my work schedule allows. Where are you from? The main restriction in mid December is typically Mother Nature. These waters are often frozen over in mid December. The river proper stays open longer, but by then it is not uncommon for the Mississippi to be frozen. most of the backwaters pictured can have two inches of ice on them while the river still flows. There are fees at the municipal marina in Savanna, but the gates will be locked at that time. There is a $5 fee at the municipal ramp in Sabula Iowa, but the ramp right on the river there is free. The ramp at Millers Landing where I typically put in is free and the ramps at the north and the new ramp at the south end of Marquette park in Savanna is free. All that said, you can put in at places other than where the ramps are. During the hunting seasons, I don’t put in early. wait till about 1000 when the shooting has stopped and most of the hunters have returned or are returning to the landing. I paddle till the water gets hard, so let me know. Mike. |
