Sanborn Canoe Co. is running another contest. This time you get to participate a little more. We don’t currently have a name for our beavertail paddle and we want you to help with that!

What do you think it should be named? If we pick your entry you win one of our beavertail paddles!

You can enter here – March Contest.

Just submitted and entry as well.  It looks like you do some great work, can’t wait to see some of your paddles in person.

That looks pretty cool but can you add an extra paddle blade at the other end?

I would call it the Slap Happy Beaver because canoeing is all about fun.

I would call it a TreeTale.

Or Ridgeback

Or a Glide

Do you make any wood seakyak paddles that would be suitable for our enviroment on the west coast of Canada? We do a lot of sea kayaking with killer whales in British columbia and have often considered ordering custom wood paddles for our fleet but have yet to find the durability we need. They would also have to split so they can be packed away but this is where the problems is. We have found that as soon as you add a connector it creates a real weak spot in the paddle shaft and they ofetn break while the clients use them to get in and out or when using a paddle float.

Oh hang on – I hope we get more than one entry, how about – The Wafer?

Hey guys. Thanks for all the great entries…keep ‘em coming.

Kayak paddles are on the wish-list! I’m especially interested in developing a Greenland-style. I’m not a big kayaker though, and haven’t used one yet. Anyone have any experience with them?

You can call the kayak paddle the Greenland Propeller.

Hey everyone. Thanks for the great responses! We’ve chosen to call our new paddle the Wapasha Beavertail. We went with Wapasha because of the historical significance to our little region of the globe.

For a little history lesson. Chief Wapasha was the father of Princess We-no-nah for which our home of Winona, Minnesota is named. Chief Wapasha III(1816-1876) was the Chief of the Sioux in our area of the country. In Winona we have a limestone rock formation that today is called Sugar Loaf. But back in the days of the early settlers it was refered to as “Wapasha’s Hat” because he always wore a red hat that reminded them of the rock formation.

As the story/legend goes Princess We-no-nah(and yes We-no-nah Canoes is named after her) was bethrothed to a man that she did not love. And instead of going through with the marriage she jumped off of Maiden Rock in Wisconsin to her death.

Quite a history(and that’s just the surface) behind the name Wapasha.

So thanks for all the great entries!

Here’s a link to see the paddle again - Wapasha Beavertail
