I wish I was going on that trip. A bunch of us are from the midwest so we have limited experience in that part of the country. James took a trip out west a couple of years ago but I think he was somewhere around Moab, Utah. I didn't have enough time to go paddling when I was in New Mexico last year.
I hope you have a good trip and that you will consider sharing it with us when you get back.

I'm also from the Midwest, but becuase i floated a ways down the East Verde River in Gila County Arizona on an air matress in 2003; i feel comfortable saying i've floated on one of the western rivers.
Anyways; Melting snow; according to my research, has a great deal of effect on river stages in New Mexico...
"The unbridled Rio Grande west of Taos is the river of
choice for experienced whitewater enthusiasts, while a tributary, the
dam-controlled Rio Chama, is preferred by those seeking a gentler ride." -http://www.nmosg.com/Canoe/Clicking Each Link Below will open the corresponding Google® Map in a new window.*
Rio
Grande Gorge
Rio Chama [major tributary of the Rio Grande enters the state atop Cumbres
Pass north of Chama]
Pecos River
Canadian River
Cimarron River
Mora River
San Juan River
Animas River
Gila River
*I couldn't pinpoint the exact locations... I would recommend using Topographic Maps such as DeLorme Topo USAYou mentioned being new to the site; have you got your paddle wet yet!?
