I was at Dick’s sporting goods the other day and they have some perception kayaks on sale for $299. They also had and Old Town Discovery 119 for 450ish. I know you guys are all into canoes here but what do you think is a better boat for playing around and fishing from. If I go on something overnight or with a couple of people I will just rent a canoe from an outfitter.

9.5 is a very short boat.  I had a Current Designs 12 foot Kestrel and it was quite short too.  I got it because I thought the double ended paddle would be more balanced at keeping me fit.  also, the low height would be little effected by the wind.  both true, but when it comes to the convienience of taking your cooler and the normal gear you want to haul with you, a canoe is very much more usefull.  You don’t need special down sized tackle boxes to go fishing in a canoe.  Also, I occasionally want to take the dog and/or my wife.  Not options with a kayak.  I got rid of my Kayak, because I just like the canoe better.  Especially for fishing where you can move abour a bit and change your seating position.  In a Kayak you are pretty much locked in.  Longer boats are faster and track better.  Even an 119 is on the short side.

If you are unsure, why don’t you check the classifieds at Paddling.Net and find a used boat in the price range you are looking for.  You will get a lot more boat for the money.  And though not a fan of Craigs List, for finding a canoe or kayak local it is a pretty good way to go.

good luck.

I have fished from my kayak a couple of times but it required a lot of organization to keep things sorted out in a limited amount of space. If fishing was my primary activity I would go for the canoe. On the other hand there have been a lot of times when no one else wanted to go for a paddle after work or on the weekend, so I would more often just go by myself. My solution was to get a solo boat which turned out to be a kayak but I could have just as easily gone for a solo canoe.

So I guess for me it boils down to the amount of time you spend paddling alone verses paddling with a partner. I found that renting a bigger boat when I needed one worked well for me.

I wrote an entire article on Canoe vs Kayak on the blog. You should check it out here http://www.adventurecanoe.com/canoe-vs-kayak

fishing from a kayak especially a SinK, sucks. Canoe is the way to go for fishing. Personally I would never get a kayak shorter than 16 ft just because the longer ones are so much faster. If you want a great kayak, get a QCC 700X.

I have one, it was my second paddlecraft, and they are extremely fast. I am kinda a speed freak.  Short kayaks just don’t have the carry capacity, stability or speed of a longer one.
