I and a couple of others are planning a trip to the BWCA. My brother-in-law has never been into the BWCA so I want to help him have a great experience, (diverse scenery, good fishing, etc.)  and the rest of us want to see some new country. We plan on  base camping but we are open to loop trips. We are looking for some advice on areas to go. We plan on about 5 days. Thanks for any help.

What side of the BWCA are you heading to?

I love the eastern side (maybe because I live in Grand Marais). Lots of great 5 day trips with diverse scenery, good fishing. Here’s a nice 31 mile loop that leaves plenty of time for fishing. Most of the portages are pretty easy. The three north-south portages have some elevation gain. Click here for the Google map.

Consider grabbing the new National Geographic Maps for your trip. The whole BWCA is on 2 maps! My review is here.

Well the good news is that the fishing is great where ever you set up camp near the BWCA. I prefer camping on the east side, so that I can enjoy the great sunsets. Some of the best campsite are avcailable at the Bearskin and Gunflint areas.
