In preparation for our next big thing (whatever that is) I have been thinking about protecting my precious camera gear on the river. James has a Pelican case for his camera that seems to do the job but I have noticed there are lots of other manufacturers who have jumped into the hard case business lately. I wondered if anyone has any experience with some of the other brands. I found an interesting video about the HPRC cases here - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0IsPp-nlR3U It’s sort of funny, so have a look. |

Dennis thought I answered this once but it’s not here. I use the Pelicans at work for a few of the pieces of gear we have. They are the best in my opinon. but they are better than they need to be for me. I have a few other brands which are similar in design of the Pelicans that work just fine. Plano the tackle box company makes some pretty good ones that are about 1/3 the price of Pelicans. Also I think I have one made by GCI that I keep my camera in. Sounds like your camera gear might deserve a Pelican though.
tried to copy a photo with negative results. then tried to link to the exact product page again no joy. at the bottom of the list is Guide series waterproof boxes link to click on sorry. http://www.planomolding.com/tackle/products.asp

Yes, Pelican seems to be the gold standard and the only thing you could find around here for the longest time. I did see one video of a Pelican being thrown from a rooftop and in that one the lid flew right off very dramatically. Those are hardly scientific tests and in fact could be rigged except that in this one the shocked look on the guy’s face was rather priceless. I was also trying to figure out what size to get. Since I travel a bit I had thought about one of the carry-on sized rolling bags but they are heavy even empty and while they would fit in a canoe, they don’t seem all that practical for that. The Pelican that James has is just big enough for a DSLR body with lens and maybe one extra lens. He currently has an Nikon 18-200 VR lens on the camera which is a pretty good all around lens which is often recommended for travel and vacation shooters. Used correctly it will produce some very fine photographs and you will not have to be changing lenses back and forth all day. I would probably try to squeeze the 12-24 wide angle in there as well and maybe, just maybe a 50mm f/1.8 for low light stuff. Rather than one big case it may be better to have a quick access case for the camera body and primary lens and then a second case for accessories like the flash units and chargers.
Note: I’ve had no success at inserting photos into these forum posts either. Hyperlinks are fine. |

I love the 12 gauge shotgun at the end… so yeah I guess the Pelican cases are the best. Altrec has some pretty good prices on them.
There’s mine on top of all my gear. It protected the rented Hasselblad that took this photo. I have the Pelican 1300 which is large enough for a D90 an extra lens and the iPhone.
I also have a couple of SeaLine bags. They’re on sale at Rock Creek now. I trust these with the point and shoot and other cheap gear. I suppose you could put your SLR in one. I have never had one fail. |

Pelican. This summer we were on my aunt and uncles cruiser on the Mississippi. My cousin, after a few beers (and whom is still in his invicibility stage of life), wanted to test the Pelican case with my DSLR in it. He tied one end of a line to the handle and tossed it in the river while underway. The case was sucked under the water in the wake of the boat, but when we reeled it in, everything on the inside was dry and unharmed.
I knew the case would hold up, but it still made me sick to stomach when I saw it flying overboard! |
